Our annual fundraising and scholarship gala took place on Saturday, October 15, 2016! This year’s theme, A Night In the Caribbean, featured island-inspired cuisine and cocktails, music and dancing to calypso, samba, and reggae beats, as well as a silent auction and a live auction with proceeds benefiting the foundation’s mission to provide better educational resources to primary-school children in rural Jamaica.
This year’s gala also featured a guest appearance from Jamaica’s Minister of Education, Youth & Information, Senator Ruel B. Reid, who spoke about the state of education in Jamaica and how partnering with organizations like the Lynne Mitchell Foundation has a positive impact. Additionally, the foundation presented two $3,000 scholarships to two students so that they may begin their high school educations with fewer worries about the cost of school fees, books, uniforms, transportation, meals, and other supplies. The two award winners were chosen from among many submitted essays from the Seaview Primary School in Jamaica, the foundation’s partner school. Gavaska Gordon and Tiffany Peart, the two scholarship recipients were both present at the gala event and shared their experiences and their future plans made possible through the foundation’s efforts.
The Gala took place at the Coral Gables Country Club – 990 Alhambra Circle, Coral Gables, FL 33135. A VIP food and drink reception began at 6:00 pm prior to the cocktail reception, hors d’oeuvres and silent auction, followed by a dinner, live auction, and entertainment, and concluding with an after party and Black Jack Tournament that began at 10:15 pm.
